Historical Context
The name of the division, Ashante or Asante Blohum, suggests a historical connection to the Asante people (Ashanti), a major ethnic group in Ghana. The word "Blohum" in the Ga language (spoken by the people of Osu) generally means "place" or "area of."
Origin and Integration
Osu Ashante Blohum, a name that plainly identifies the integration of emigrants or assimilated groups tied to the Ashanti Kingdom into the Osu community following the regional wars and conflicts. This integration contributed significantly to Osu's history Osu Ashante as the Broker quarter: the "Broker's Quarter" name reflecting the pivotal role its residents played in facilitating trade between the powerful Asante interior and the European coastal forts. Despite the quarter's distinct identity and its ties to the inland Ashanti, it remains fundamentally connected to the original Osu polity, sharing an ancestral root with other quarters like Osu Kinkawe which trace their lineage back to Osuwem in the Shai Osudoku area, all united under the traditional spiritual authority of the Klottey Nadu Wulomo (Chief Priest).
Political Structure
Each division has its own Stool (symbol of authority) and leadership, which falls under the paramountcy of the Osu Mantse and the Osu Traditional Council. The chief of the Osu Ashante division, who is the Mankralo, plays a specific role in the traditional governance of Osu.
Authority and Governance
Traditional Leadership
In the context of the Osu Ashante division, the traditional leader is the divisional chief, who occupies the Mankralo Stool.
Stool
As with all Akan and Ga traditional areas, the Stool is the central symbol of traditional authority, embodying the spirit and history of the people.
Role
The chief of the Osu Ashante division is an important member of the Osu Traditional Council. He is the Mankralo of Osu, is second in command of Osu, and is responsible for the affairs and people of the Ashante quarter, including the resolution of internal disputes and the performance of traditional rites and festivals, such as the annual Homowo Festival. He acts as Mantse in the absence of the Osu Mantse.
